Novel project

Symbolism: In the lightning theif objects and or images are used to represent ideas such as the lighting bolt; representing power and dominance was a main component in this novel. The lightining bolt's presence represented peace in an abstract form because with out it there would be a war between all of the gods. Also Percy's dreams which played both foreshadowing and also symbolism in them. Since his dreams would give clues or ideas to him so he could be careful or make sense of things.

Foreshadowing: This plays a very big role in this novel. Foreshadowing is used many times throughout the story and it is what makes it suspenseful. Also it really keeps you on your toes and encourages you to keep reading. In The Lightning Thief Chiron percy's latin teacher who is really a minotaur tells him to go to the attic to speak to a sort of fourtune teller. When he does he is told many things and one thing that stood out the most was that he was going to be betrayed by the one he called friend. The whole book I would watch for hints about who it would be and I couldn't believe it that Luke was the one who ended up betraying him.

Atmosphere: The atmosphere really changed the mood when Percy, Grover, and Annabel entered the underworld. They gave a vivid descripition that really impacted my mood even. And also had an impact on the descicions taken. The gloominess and sadness assured them that they did not want to end up there. And they wanted to get everything done quickly and try to get out as soon as possible.

Flashback: Percy has alot of vivid flashbacks of when his mother got taken by the monster the image of her kept him going on his quest to find and return the lightning bolt he was being blamed for stealing. Also he had flahsbacks of seeing his father's warm smile as a baby which made him want to make him rpud and prove that he did just fine without his father in his life.

Plot Twist: I think the plot twist was when at the end you find out that Luke was the one who took the lightning bolt because you were given hints throughout the story but, it was in no way obvious. I never expected for him to end up being the bad guy. I was really taken by surprise but at the same time disapointed since I really liked luke.

Digressive Time: In the story this happens often mostly when making descions. Percy is contemplating and takes a look at the events that have happened in the past and what could happen in the future. Making a flash foward flash back scene.

Progressive Time:    q

  1. I really like these examples; they have a lot of detail and are very clear. You can easily tell that the examples are for the right figurative language devices. I also like how you put your own take on the examples - for example, you said how you were surprised and a little disappointed about finding out that Luke was the lightning thief.
